They are fantastic photographs .
It is such a wonderful building. I love to read about it’s history and the stories of people’s experience of working there.
Great idea this site and I shall revisit it often.
It was good to find this site as most of the people who worked in Lewis’s were happy,I have many memories and find it sad what is happening to this great store. The brasses on the doors always shone and the entrances were clean and welcoming, the staff canteen was always busy and Miss Elliott and Margaret could be quite formidable, although the Christmas lunch was different as management served the staff after we had queued up for our chosen sitting! Such a happy time. I hope you get many visiting this site.
I will visit the exhibition soon but nice to see the pictures and read the memories.
My mum worked in the store for a while but I mostly remember the treats of eating out in the cafeteria, Mersey Room with its model ships in reception and the Red Rose restaurant (a real treat! with the lovely trifle)
I have such happy memories of the fifth floor. My Father (Hugh Sinclair) was Manager of the Cafeteria for 25 years until he retired in 1973. My Mum and I used to go in and see him on a Saturday for lunch and they used to leave me with the ‘girls’ in the cafeteria whilst they went off shopping. It brings back very warm feelings when I see the distinctive tiling on the walls. Also remember having my hair cut in the Salon – felt very sophisticated!
Tina Jackson whose portrait is on this site was a wonderful manager to work for and there are not many bosses I could say that about.
I loved working in the store and made many good friends.
I miss everyone so much.
I hope everyone is well and good luck for the future.
My Nana, Minnie Cleghorn was very proud to work in ‘Ladies three Quarter-length Coats’ in Lewis’s during the ’40s and ’50s. Working in Lewis’s and her nights out on the town with ‘the girls’ who she worked with were sources of real pleasure for her.
